| Description of Services: | The site consists of a semi-wet process cement plant with a single kiln that has clinker manufacturing. The plant also has an on-site 15 MW power station and an on-site colony that provides housing for over 2000 people (workers and families). Limestone and other raw materials for the cement operations are transported by truck from quarries located 4 km (Madukkarai Mine) and 22 km (Walayar Mine) from the plant site. The primary kiln fuel is coal. All alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) co-processing related operations at the facility are handled by Geocycle India. Geocycle is the brand of the business units in the Holcim Group companies active in waste management by applying the technology of co-processing in cement kilns. There is four Geocycle staff at the facility, and this staff is further supported by contracted labor force of an additional 12 on-site staff (3-4 people per shift/3 shifts per day) dedicated to AFR operations. In India, Geocycle offers waste assessment and analysis in the on-site AFR laboratory, waste pre-processing (primarily waste repackaging), and co-processing in the cement kiln. The site has been approved for co-processing of AFR since 2007, and can co-process both scheduled hazardous and non-hazardous solid wastes. There are currently no established capabilities for liquid waste co-processing, but this may be implemented in the future. |
